A similar symbol was used by the Norse to depict Thor holding his hammer. This symbol also had ties to sun worship. It seems clear that this symbol was one of the very first symbols people used to express how they related to the world, even before a written language was developed. The use of this "swastika" by the early Germanic and Scandanavian tribes is probably why Hilter picked it as a symbol of his "Aryan Nation".
